Jack Frost

Welcome Jack Frost on my van window

I’m pleased it turned cold, slow growth up a bit, it has been too mild of late you may have noticed much too early catkins growing in the hedgerow, a flower that shows too soon can be hit by the severe weather reducing the fruiting later.

Frost is good for the garden; some plants like deciduous fruit trees need a winter chilling, the frost turns starches to sugar in crops like parsnips, and kale improving their flavour.

Frosts help reduce pest and disease and improve soil structure.

I use this time to expose the roots of weeds like the ground elder, nothing like a good frost to knock this back, an excellent organic method of clearing the ground.
